True natural citrine has a warmth that is usually subtler than the bright orange stone commonly sold under its name. Its colour may range from pale champagne and honey yellow to richer amber or smoky gold, often with uneven zoning or clearer areas within the same crystal.
Our citrine skulls are individually photographed and filmed, so you can judge the actual colour, transparency and internal character of the exact carving available. We do not intensify the images to make a pale natural stone appear darker or more saturated than it really is. What you see is what you get.
Much of the citrine found commercially begins as amethyst that has been heated until its purple colour changes to yellow or orange. It remains genuine quartz, but it is not naturally coloured citrine. Heat-treated material often has a strong burnt-orange or reddish tone, sometimes concentrated around a white base.
Natural citrine generally has a softer, earthier colour. Some pieces carry smoky undertones, while others are almost clear with only a light golden tint. Because strong natural colour is relatively difficult to find, pale does not necessarily mean low quality. Transparency, internal formations, size and the beauty of the individual carving all matter.
Golden healer quartz is different again. Its yellow or golden appearance comes from iron minerals coating the crystal or occurring along internal fractures and surfaces. It may resemble citrine at first glance, but the colour is carried by the iron rather than being the natural body colour of citrine. We describe each skull according to the material it is actually carved from rather than using the names interchangeably.

Natural citrine rough suitable for skull carving is never completely uniform, and that individuality is part of its appeal. We inspect each finished piece in person and present its real colour and natural features as accurately as possible before it enters the collection.
Any skull offered as natural citrine is selected and described as naturally coloured material, not amethyst that has been heated to turn it yellow or orange. When a piece is made from treated material or a different golden variety of quartz, it should be identified accordingly rather than simply labelled natural citrine.
Natural citrine commonly has a pale yellow, champagne, honey or smoky-golden colour, often distributed gradually through the crystal. Heat-treated amethyst is frequently much brighter orange, bright yellow, or reddish brown and may show a sharp contrast between intensely coloured points and a pale or white base.
Appearance alone is not an infallible laboratory test, but the original rough, colour pattern and sourcing history can provide important evidence. We assess the whole stone rather than relying only on how yellow it looks.
No. Citrine’s yellow colour is part of the quartz crystal itself. Golden healer quartz is clear or milky quartz coloured by iron minerals on its surfaces, inside fractures or around natural inclusions.
Both can have beautiful warm golden tones, but their colour forms differently. We keep the distinction clear in our product descriptions so collectors know which material they are choosing.
Naturally formed citrine is often much lighter than the vivid orange material seen in many crystal shops. A faint champagne or golden tint can be completely natural, particularly in highly transparent quartz.
Colour strength is only one part of its quality. A pale skull may have excellent clarity, internal mirrors, rainbows or a particularly refined carving, while a darker piece may be more opaque or uneven.
Price depends on the size and quality of the original crystal, the certainty and attractiveness of its natural colour, its transparency and internal features, and the amount of work involved in the carving.
Large skulls of naturally coloured citrine suitable for carving are harder to obtain than common treated material. Strong colour can add value, but proportion, polish and the complete character of the skull remain equally important.
Citrine is traditionally linked with confidence, creativity, optimism and abundance. Its warm yellow and golden tones have also led to associations with sunlight and personal vitality.
These are spiritual and symbolic traditions rather than scientifically established effects. Some collectors choose citrine for those meanings, while others simply appreciate its natural warmth and rarity.
Look beyond the deepest yellow colour. Consider whether you prefer pale champagne clarity, smoky golden tones, stronger honey colouring or a crystal filled with internal formations.
Then study the carving from the front, side and back. On a one-of-a-kind skull, the balance between natural colour, crystal character and workmanship is more meaningful than any single grading factor.
Clean it gently with a soft dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, sudden temperature changes and prolonged exposure to strong direct sunlight, which may gradually affect the colour of citrine. Display heavier skulls on a stable surface and lift them securely with two hands, as polished quartz can chip if struck or dropped.
